چکیده

Speckle is an inherent characteristic of tissues when assessed by ultrasound. De-speckling is performed to improve the visualization of anatomical details but the information encoded in speckle is often discarded. In this paper we propose an ultrasonic decomposition procedure which estimates despeckled and speckle images starting with images created from Radio Frequency (RF) data. These images are used to extract features of tissue echogenicity (acoustic properties) and textural information of the tissue parenchyma. Three-case studies demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed decomposition methodology for tissue characterization.

Temperature Mapping Using Ultrasound Digital Images

Introduction:  The  success  of  hyperthermia  depends  on  the  accuracy  of  the  temperature  monitoring in the tumor and the surrounding normal tissue. In this study, the temperature changes  were determined by computing the speckle displacement in the ultrasound digital images. Speckle  tracking algorithm was used to compute the displacement.  Materials and Methods: The experiment was perf...

A Generalized Gamma Mixture Model for Ultrasonic Tissue Characterization

Several statistical models have been proposed in the literature to describe the behavior of speckles. Among them, the Nakagami distribution has proven to very accurately characterize the speckle behavior in tissues. However, it fails when describing the heavier tails caused by the impulsive response of a speckle. The Generalized Gamma (GG) distribution (which also generalizes the Nakagami distr...

Ultrasonic texture motion analysis: theory and simulation

A theoretical model was previously developed to evaluate the relationship between the dynamics of ultrasonic speckle and its underlying tissue. The model is divided into an instrumental part represented by the point spread function (in the far field) of the ultrasonic apparatus and a moving tissue component described by a collection of scatterers. By computing the convolution of these terms and...

Quantification of Ultrasonic Texture heterogeneity via Volumetric Stochastic Modeling for Tissue Characterization

Intensity variations in image texture can provide powerful quantitative information about physical properties of biological tissue. However, tissue patterns can vary according to the utilized imaging system and are intrinsically correlated to the scale of analysis. In the case of ultrasound, the Nakagami distribution is a general model of the ultrasonic backscattering envelope under various sca...
